When to Use a Dual Declaration Food Label and Why

The Standard Nutrition Facts Label is the most commonly used label format on packaged foods in the United States, and we recommend that you use this format whenever possible. However, there may be times when you will need to use a different format, such as a Dual Declaration Label.

The Dual Declaration Label is used for food that requires further preparation (such as dry cake mixes or dry pasta products), food that is commonly combined with other ingredients (such as cereal plus milk), or to show nutrition information for two serving sizes.

Example 1: Cake Mix as packaged and as prepared
In this example, the product requires further preparation. Note that the analysis for one serving of the product as purchased is shown first.

Example 2: Cereal as purchased and with milk
In this example, the product is typically eaten with another food, note here again that the product information as purchased is shown first.

Example 3: Soda in two common serving sizes
You may also want to list several serving size options, in this example, the required serving size is shown first.
