Database Licensing through ESHA's Web Services

Rather than developing and maintaining your own nutrient database, you will save countless man hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars by relying on ESHA's expertise in this area.

The nutrient database for our Web service API totals more than 13,536 foods, tracks 18+ nutrients and combines nutrient data from 246 suppliers, and is updated frequently.

You will not find a more accurate, more extensive nutrient database anywhere.

WEB SERVICES

By using ESHA’s Web service API (application programming interface) you can circumvent several programming obstacles associated with creating the nutrition analysis component of a web application, freeing you to focus on the design and execution. We take care of the tedious but necessary nuts and bolts of nutrition analysis that must occur behind the scenes.

For instance, with ESHA’s Web service, you:

Have access to a high-quality ingredient database — our ESHA Nutrient Database.
Can search the database of Ingredients quickly and are returned the most relevant results.
Analyze a list of ingredients for nutrition content. By the way, the Web service doesn't care if a “list of ingredients” represents a recipe for lasagna or what someone ate for breakfast lunch and dinner.

We also take care of:

Determining what measures are appropriate for each ingredient — for instance, is “cup” available for milk and for steak?
Database maintenance and updating by our panel of research experts.
Identifying default common measures of foods.

Cost

The cost of the web service depends on the volume of traffic (queries per month) and the number of nutrients analyzed. Contact ESHA for a quote.

Exercise Data

We also have a database of 564 exercises that includes both calories burned and MET values (from the American College of Sports medicine Resource Manual, 5th edition, 2006) available for licensing.

Attribution

If the nutrition analysis or reports generated by the application are for public or published commercial purposes (e.g., books, brochures or web pages summarizing the nutritional content) the Licensee will include ESHA’s Copyright and Trademark notification in the “About” section of the web site or other similar acknowledgment section of the published material. Licensee shall not otherwise use ESHA’s name or trademarks without ESHA’s prior written consent.

Database

Our nutrient databases total more than 37,000 unique foods, track 160+ nutrient factors, and combine nutrient data from 1500+ sources of information.

With the latest USDA data-sets at its core, and a team of researchers updating the information daily, you will not find a more extensive, accurate database anywhere.

Database Structuring

Our master database consists of over 37,000 items – ranging from food components (potassium bicarbonate) to common items (eggs, sugar) to fast foods (Wendy's, Denny's) to brand name items (Gerber baby foods, Kraft).

Since each situation is unique, we are set up to accommodate nearly any structure you desire. Not only can you choose which database section(s), which food group(s) and which nutrients/nutrient factors are included in your database, but we will we will do our best to provide the database to you in your required format – from comma delimited to a relational database (in MS Access, for example.)

In addition, provisions can be made for periodic (quarterly, annually, etc.) database updates.

An initial database can be shipped within days of a contract, with preliminary (sample) databases available any time before that. This sample database often gets things in motion for design and preliminary testing of the application.

Exercise Database

In addition to the nutrient information, we can provide you with a database of more than 654 exercises and activities, and the amount of calories each activity burns over a specific period of time.

This database can be used alone, but would make an excellent addition to your nutrition database package.
